- Work standing up? Sounds like a good ideal to me…Almost two months ago, I decided that I wanted to try working standing up, rather than sitting down. When sitting in my comfortable, reclining office chair, my posture was terrible, my attention span was narrowing rapidly, and I was constantly battling fatigue. After looking around online a bit, it sounded like standing was the way to go. (via 37 signals)
- CCleaner 2.0 it’s the bomb and it’s free…One of our favorite PC cleansers CCleaner (which stands for “Crap Cleaner”) saw an upgrade this week. Since the last time we mentioned CCleaner several new versions have come out; this week’s added support for the Firefox 3 beta plus performance improvements and bug fixes. CCleaner scans your PC for unnecessary temporary and log files, cookies, memory dumps, and more and wipes them out at the press of the “Run Cleaner” button. (via lifehacker)
- Back it up baby! I take file backups and redundancy seriously. You might think it’s because, in a past life, I was a systems and network engineer for an aerospace company, in charge of the backups for all of our corporate data, everything from payroll and HR to user-created files. Nobody ever forgets those middle-of-the-night visits to the server room, bleary-eyed, standing at the VT220 hard-wired console, using commands like
dumpfsandrestore, working through stack after stack of tapes from the fire-safe, so the VP of Something can get that file he deleted last week (or was it last month?), for that meeting in whatever town tomorrow morning. (via hivelogic) - What is Tungle? Tungle works two ways, the first is for people that already know each other well enough to share calendars. For them via the magic of peer-to-peer Tungle can look at the calendars of all the people who might need to be invited and at a glance let you see when people have open slots in their schedules. - iSwish converts your lame Windows Mobile device into a fake iPhone…While you can argue that Windows Mobile is feature-for-feature and spec-for-spec superior to OS X on the iPhone, Apple’s mobile UI is certainly more fun to use. So if you’re running WinMo with a hankerin’ for rubber band-like scrolling, jiggly icons, screen flicking, SummerBoard themes, and even simulated multi-touch pinching of photos then you’re in luck. Flick Software Research is set to release its iSwish interface and iZoom pinch software in beta come “early May.” (via engadget)
- A strategic perspective on how we spend our time…riggghhhhttttt Though most managers understand intellectually that time is their scarcest resource, few make the effort to gain a strategic perspective on how they spend their hours each week. Still fewer make a regular practice of keeping track of how the priorities they say are most important jibe with the way they actually spend their time. “Those we label natural born leaders know how to leverage their time,” writes Warren Blank in The 108 Skills of Natural Born Leaders (Amacom, 2001). For those in whom this talent is not innate, here’s how to do it. (via harvard business online)
- How to be a slacker without hurting your career…It is possible to work fewer hours without hurting your career, but you need to get serious about systematically changing how you approach your work. First, don’t blame your long hours on your boss, your CEO, or your underlings. Someone who does not make a conscious, organized effort to take responsibility for the number of hours they work can be thrown off course by anyone. But the person who systematically follows the steps below will not be thrown off course, even by a workaholic boss in a workaholic industry. (via brazen careerist)
- Can you GTD without a computer? For iPhone owners who aren’t paid-up members of the Church of GTD, life can be hard. Browse through the productivity apps on Apple’s website, and it seems that every other offering is based on David Allen’s system. It’s almost as though it’s not enough to have a mind like a filing cabinet to get the most out of GTD. You also need a pocketful of whiz-bang gadgetry and all the electronic gizmos you can think of to keep your lists in order. (via geekpreneur)
- I just moved my desk and the tangle of cables under my desk is shameful…Studies show that the clutter underneath your desk is to blame for all the failures in your life! Okay, so maybe that statement is completely false but it is a fact that clutter can lead to issues. One way to combat these issues is to head in the polar opposite direction by practicing some extreme OCD clutter control under your desk! (via closet entrepreneur)
