Mr. obvious strikes again!

You know what you need to do. You know why you need to do it. You even know what steps you must take to get it done. But there’s one small problem: you can’t seem to get moving. It’s a common problem. Maybe it’s chronic procrastination or maybe you’re just so overwhelmed that you feel paralyzed.

Darren please tell us how you gtd with Evernote?

I have been using Evernote as one of my capture tools recently. I set it up with 3 and only 3 Notebooks. Simple. My default is INBOX. This is where all my incoming notes, emails, photos etc go. This is my collection bucket and is completely unprocessed. I get this INBOX to zero daily most of the time.

Skype for OS X is updated…thats good right?

How us home bound info workers can be better slackers…

But we do all need mental breaks to recharge. I can’t just not take breaks because taking them is too much work. So to cope with this challenge I’ve developed a system of being able to partially dial back my level of work activity. This gives me some of the mental feeling of taking time off without the break itself causing a stressful workload.

What is productivity in the light of our post modern reality????

There has been rising concerns that “productivity is dead” and that people are moving on to new things. The conditions have changed that created the initial excitement around “productivity.” Most people are now comfortable with the internet, their computers, and the associated “knowledge work” that they no longer need ways to help them cope. In that sense, “productivity” is no longer needed.

After 12 years of waiting….

Many, many months ago, it looked like an official solution for syncing BlackBerry devices with the Mac (including media and iTunes playlists) was right around the corner. Now, almost a year later, RIM is finally making it official. But don’t get too excited. You still have to wait until September before the new software will be available for download.

Hacking your sleep? Riigghhhhhttttt….

One of the ways to force your brain into REM sleep and skip the other phases is to make it feel exhausted. If you’ve gone 24 hours without sleep, you might notice that you drift away into dreams straight from being awake. This because your body goes instantly into REM sleep as a protection mechanism. The way to hack yourself into entering REM sleep without being exhausted is to trick your body into thinking you’re going to get a tiny amount of sleep. You can train it to enter REM for short periods of time throughout the day in 20-minute naps rather than in one lump at night. This is how polyphasic sleep works.

One of my favorite ubiquitous capture applications Evernote is now available for the Crackberry.

Evernote for BlackBerry can create notes containing text, images, audio recordings, and file attachments on-the-go, and like the iPhone version, any note you create from your BlackBerry will be automatically uploaded to and synced with Evernote wherever you have it installed.

The creative process?

My sense, though, is that for most people who repeatedly do (and sell) creative work, this all seems a bit like wanting to feel like a world-class athlete. Because “feeling creative” produces great work in approximately the same way that “feeling like a doctor” makes you a gifted thoracic surgeon.

Uuuuummm paper!

New Year, new templates. The D*I*Y Planner Dynamic Template application has now hit version 2.0, ready to produce any size and shape of yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily calendars for your printing pleasure. All designs are based upon the Classic versions of the D*I*Y Planner, along with input from Doug, and so will integrate completely into your DiyP setup. (The daily design was created by Doug, but was never implemented as a static template owing to the insane amount of repetitive work required.)

Free your eyes and productivity will follow…

Columnist David Brooks, commenting in the Dec. 16th New York Times about Malcolm Gladwell’s latest book called “Outliers,” made a statement as profound as it was accurate: “Control of attention is the ultimate individual power,” he wrote. “People who can do that are not prisoners of the stimuli around them.”

Let me see you explain this bad boy to your boss

Taking a nap at one’s desk isn’t the easiest thing to do, but taking a quick desk nap just got easier with the iSleep USB pillow. To use, just plug this inflatable pillow into an available USB port on your computer. (That is if you have a USB port to spare.)

SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry…anybody care?

Their initial SlingPlayer only worked on Windows-based PC’s. With today’s public beta launch of SlingPlayer Mobile for BlackBerry, I can now access my cable TV subscription on a BlackBerry from any location worldwide where it has high speed Internet access.

Problems with your short term memory? Well here comes cramberry…

A web app that helps people (students, actors, or anyone else) memorize things (schoolwork, lines in a play, etc.) using flashcards. Users create a blank "set" of flashcards, then name the set, and start adding cards to the set. Once you’re ready, the app presents these cards to you in a random order so you can answer the cards.

Manage thangs with Things…

The latest application from Cultured Code is Things, a task organizer and to-do list manager for Mac and iPhone. It centers around the ideas encompassed in Getting Things Done (GTD) and makes it easy to break down and organize tasks.

Singing the praises of pen and paper…

Lamy Safari – Why? Because they are inexpensive, great writers, are built like a tank, and are available in really cool colors. My first fountain pen was a Safari, and I still love them (I now have four of them) as much as when I started out.

The innovative folks over at Life Church have updated their excellent Bible app for the Blackberry

If you have a BlackBerry, you really should download the new (and significantly improved) YouVersion.com Bible App for the BlackBerry!  As many of you know, I have been a long-time BlackBerry user (I love the iPhone, but it’s not for me).  I’ve really been looking forward to this release, not just for me, but for the 16+ million BlackBerry users around the globe.

  • Yup even the mighty Crackberry desktop software can be vulnerable…A “critical” security vulnerability has been found in the BlackBerry Desktop Software in a knowledge base article (see KB16469) published by R.I.M. on Nov. 27th, and confirmed by Secunia, a leading vulnerability intelligence provider. • Pimp out Google Reader with Helvetireader…Jon Hicks from Hicks Design has released the Helvetireader skin for Google Reader. Helvetireader takes a minimalist approach, masking many of Google Readers abilities, creating a simple and very easy to read interface to Google’s excellent RSS feed reader. (via the apple blog)
  • The ultimate geek overnight bag? the ZÜCA bag is my new best friend for when I need to travel for a week or less. These are the reasons why I think the ZÜCA bag is great: The insert bags. I don’t always use each and every one of the insert bags, but I use most of them. I put my shoes and belts in one, my shirts in another, etc. They keep shoe crud from getting on my clothing.(via unclutterer)
  • Still living in your moms basement and have never kissed a girl? Got multiple Twitter accounts? Well here is a little relief…Splitweet allows the Twitter users to compose a list of accounts and distribute their tweets, choosing their release in one or more of their accounts. You can also follow your following tweets from all of your managed accounts in Splitweet. (via e-hub)
  • Yes our geek prayers have been answered, you can now watch Joost on your iPhone or iPod Touch! Television and movie streaming service Joost officially finds its way to the iPhone and iPod touch. Joost started out as a desktop application, was quickly overshadowed by online offerings like Hulu, then recently moved to the web in an attempt to keep up with the competition. With its new iPhone/iPod touch application, Joost is back in the drivers seat, beating the likes of Hulu to Apple’s popular mobile devices. (via lifehacker)
  • Ms. Tharp your thoughts on creativity…Creativity is not just for artists. It’s for businesspeople looking for a new way to close a sale; it’s for engineers trying to solve a problem; it’s for parents who want their children to see the world in more than one way. Over the past four decades, I have been engaged in one creative pursuit or another every day, in both my professional and my personal life. I’ve thought a great deal about what it means to be creative, and how to go about it efficiently. I’ve also learned from the painful experience of going about it in the worst possible way. I’ll tell you about both. And I’ll give you exercises that will challenge some of your creative assumptions — to make you stretch, get stronger, last longer. After all, you stretch before you jog, you loosen up before you work out, you practice before you play. It’s no different for your mind. (via simon says)
  • Productivity rituals? It’s not uncommon for successful and productive people to have rituals: small things that they do on a regular basis. For instance, getting into the car and saying a small mantra for safe journey, or getting up in the morning and making your coffee first thing. (via fresh focus)
  • Patrick Ng is one of the most elegant dudes on the interweb and in this post he shares how he gtd’s…As an advocate of David Allen’s GTD practice, I constantly look for ways to improve my productivity and organize the million things around me.  Inspired by Merlin Mann’s hipster pda, I set out to create my very own version I called mind.Depositor. The index cards I use have to be 4×6 in. since anything smaller will increase my writing pressure and makes me feel confined.  The cover has to be leather because of the love of my Midori Traveler’s Notebook.  (via scription)

Back from my cyber-vacation, tanned rested and ready…so let the productivity begin!

See…all the great one’s take time off, every once and a while.

Putting ducks in rows. Reading. Setting up my first office. Helping family and friends. Signing lots of forms. Writing large checks. Learning how adults run an actual business. Reading some more. Staring and thinking. Watching my daughter learn to walk while talking to a saltine. And, one of my favorite new skills: learning to evaluate (then mostly ignore) any impulse that presses me to publish something here before my brain’s done thinking about it. In my opinion, that’s a luxury I must figure out how to afford for the rest of my life.

Getting thang’s done with OneNote?

Within OneNote you set up tags for things like Processing, Contexts (@home, @calls, etc.), and for Projects. I additionally set up a tag for Someday/Maybe which was absent from Rob’s implementation. The tags are the most critical part of the implementation and the part that has done the most to radically improve my workflow. OneNote has checkbox style tags that allow you to tag and then check off items, very handy.

Unclutterer is now on Twitter…so let the time sucking begin!

Unclutterer is expanding to include additional daily tips on home and office organizing over Twitter through the user account UncluttererTips.

We come across so many wonderful ideas and solutions, but not all of them have enough meat for a full Unclutterer post. Instead of letting these great ideas go unshared, we have decided to let you know about them in 140 characters or less.

GTD…remember that? Kelly please let’s take a stroll down memory lane.

As with all of the five phases of GTD: Mastering Workflow (Collect>Process>Organize>Review>Do), Collect has best practices and worst practices:

Best practices: out of your head, into leak-proof locations, clean edges between collect and organize
Worst practices: in your head, spread all around, blended with reference and what’s already been decided (collect is not organize!)

Google releases some new stuff for the Crackberry…

Almost a year ago, Google introduced Google Sync. This allowed for a wireless reconciliation of your BlackBerry and Google calendars. Like many other Google/Berry users, I’ve found this to be an essential BlackBerry application. This, combined with the awesome IMAP capabilities on Gmail, means that I can sync most of my Google suite with my Berry. Except, of course, for contacts. We knew this day was coming, and it’s finally here. You can now sync your Google contacts with your BlackBerry.

Productivity magazine…

I’m deviating from my usual posting schedule this week to mention the first release of the Productive Magazine. Not only is it free to download, I’m also in it! My post on how to deal with having one of those days has been included, as well as 16 other posts from top productivity bloggers. When I was originally asked to submit something I wasn’t sure what the end result would be but having seen the finished product I’m very pleased and proud to have been a part of it.

I actually tried to use Things…once.

Things is a GTD system designed for Mac computers with mobile applications for the iPhone and iTouch. To any user of David Allen’s productivity system, Things should look very familiar. Hot keys (or mouse clicking) will bring up a task window for easy entry. To each task, you can add notes, due dates, links to files, and customizable tags, which serve as “contexts.”
