I work for a University in the Bay Area as a Help Desk monkey. My team supports our online students who attend our fine school from far as wide as Korea, Iraq and Greece. I work the evening shift from 11pm to 7am and my evening usual starts around 10ish opening up iTunes and downloading my favorite podcast (geek stuff mostly with a little PTI thrown in) then I log into the University network via VPN and open up Outlook to read my groovy email. I have a machine on campus that I can access using Logmein because some file’s or intranet junk I cant get to using VPN. We use Peoplesoft and a web based trouble ticketing system to keep track of cases and most of my interaction with the students is through email. On the hardware side I use a P4 with a dual monitor setup (I traded my G4 in for a Dell and gave it to my sister in law) and a old Thinkpad 600x laptop which I love because I can surf the web, read my RSS feeds, watch DVD’s on it and it just works, plus it was free! I recently laided to rest my palm and now just use a Moleskine weekly planner and Google calendar to keep track of life’s great mystery. I have a pocket size Moleskine which fits perfectly into my palm wallet which I use to keep track of my brilliant ideals, I also use a Moleskine lined journal for note taking. The challenging thing about working from home is that you have to be totally self motivated and even though I work from home I make sure I wear clean Tuxedo every night, okay maybe not, I just make sure I don’t degenerate into a sweat suit wearing Jabba the Hut type figure, so I put on clean clothes and have purchased a Mr. Burns action figure to act as my in house supervisor. So that’s how I work fascinating huh?
